 The Bible says...
James Ch 4:13 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."

If I was out 'dj-ing' tonight...

There's a song I've heard on the Gerry Anderson Show on BBC Radio Ulster during the last week, a song performed by Northern Ireland's Rolf Harris. A song that when you hear once you want to hear and enjoy again. The song is entitled The Wee Wee Man.

The performer of the song is an interesting character who I've had the privilege to meet once in Cookstown. On his MySpace page he sums himself up...
Influences ALL SORTS OF STUFF. Books, TV, Comics, Film, Random Ideas, Carrying a notebook, Observing people and situations, Humour, Laughter, Giggling, Breathing on a regular basis, Being Human, Having Freckles, Washing daily, Sneezing, the rain in Northern Ireland, that's why I have rust covered arms and legs. I'm influenced by lots of other stuff too . . .
I'll always remember when he was talking to the creative writers group I was attending at the time he said that writers should always carry notebooks with them  to jot down ideas. I'll admit I don't always but will try to make it a habit, it does help.
The song I'd play if I was 'dj-ing' tonight, that you'll want to listen to can be heard here. To find out more about his 'day job' check his site out here. And, tell me if you agree with me that Randall Stephen Hall is Northern Ireland's answer to Rolf Harris.

Is it only 4 weeks now left to care for Iris?

I remember a few weeks ago when Peter Robinson shared that he planned to care for his wife Iris, who it was reported was undergoing acute psychiatric treatment. He is such an amazing man, after those shock revelations about his wife returning back to work on the 7th Jan. A week later it was reported that Peter Robinson had rejoined the talks, on the future of the Northern Ireland Assembly.  On the 22nd Jan the news was that Peter Robinson had raised the possibility of his party the DUP merging with the Ulster Unionists. Then we found out that he had attended talks in Hatfield House in Hertfordshire in England discussing that proposal.

Over the last few days he has  been busy negotiating at Hillsborough. How does he find the time to even talk to Iris, never mind care for her? Was she as ill as reported? Could the current negotiations between the DUP and Sinn Fein just be an attempt for those two parties to distract the public from the issues of trust the leaders of both parties have lost?

People don't forget that quickly what happened, what was promised and what has been reported to have been done. I'm sure like me people wonder how Iris is doing or has she been treated the way that people with mental illness have been treated for too long. Is she just an embarrassment to the DUP now, locked away out of the public's gaze, is this the way the DUP treat people like her? Is it only four weeks left now?

God Bless, Bob West

The last time I read Bob's blog I was inspired and reminded of two words, the words were 'Theoretical Christianity'. I've read and heard so many sermons like countless others who've regularly gone to church on Sunday and by Monday lunchtime have forgotten what the preacher had preached. The chances are that if I'd remembered what had been taught and actually put into practice what was taught I'd be a Christian Celebrity by now.The same sermons are being preached and re-preached to the same people who never seem to heed to what is being preached or taught. What would happen if the verse Matthew 19:21 was the verse the sermon was based on. A verse preached about, not taken in context and accepted as being the direct Word of God not  changed in any way by man. The verse from the ...
New Living Translation

Jesus told him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.

I have still to meet a Christian that wants to be perfect. A Christian who has sold all his possessions and gave them to the poor, a Christian who is really following Jesus. I have and continue to meet, what I call, Theoretical Christians. God Bless them and God Bless Bob West too :-)

A charity that doesn't appeal to me.

I hate it when scrounging organisations shove stickers/leaflets through my letterbox and expect me to donate to them. Most times the stickers and bin bags get binned unless they look a bit suspect. It's then I start to try and find out more about the organisation. The latest sticker/leaflet shoved through my letterbox was from an organisation called 'Northern Ireland International Children's Charity Appeal' It had a PO Box address which I found strange. If they're legitimate they'd have a proper postal address. They'd have an office or a collection centre open to the public. Next I noticed a mobile phone number as a contact number, I'd understand prostitutes advertising their services using mobile numbers but an organisation calling itself a charity I'd expect to have a normal landline for the public to call.

They also had a  link to a website That's a bit better I thought, now I can find out some more about the charity. The website should explain the work that is carried out in the Ukraine and just how they help the children out there. The site www.niicca.co.uk was a disappointment and consisted of an email subscription link and...

This isn't looking too good. They want  me to donate unwanted clothing, shoes, towels etc to be sold in a gift shop. The work they print on their leaflet isn't important enough to put on their website.Next stop in my investigation into who's behind this sticker/leaflet shoved through my letterbox is the http://www.who.is website where I find out that the site is registered to an individual who's address is given, an address of a house that looks just like this...

I then find out from Karin Alison Abraham's website that the registrant of the NIICCA website Ruth Bell founded the charity organisation after finding 30 abandoned babies in the Crimea.Due to the lack of information  on both the leaflet and on the website of NIICCA I still was curious and found a link to an organisation who on their website claim among other things that...

River of Joy is a funnel to introduce children into families..

We support, build, teach, encourage, and develop Christian foster families and...

On the same website in the contact section, guess who's listed
NORTHERN IRELAND CHILDREN'S CHARITY APPEAL: R.Bell, NIICCA - 224D Shore Road,Carrickfergus, BT38 8TX, UK. Tel: +44 (0) 79 8608 5070 info@niicca.co.uk
NIICCA is accepted as a charity by the Inland Revenue under reference XR54953
So if I donated unwanted clothing, shoes, towels ,bedding etc what happens, who benefits? Did someone really find 30 abandoned babies in the Crimea and form a charity or was there an organisation already doing what  was printed on the leaflet shoved through my letterbox?

More searching, when I start I just can't stop, reveals that a guy who calls himself the Poetic Plumber has proceeds on some of his books going to NIICCA. It also reveals the 2010 McIntyre Poetry Awards has, according to this site, been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. What is going on here?

I'm not going to search any more even though I've questions about adoption. Questions arise about adoption from the Ukraine. If  I go to the right church and want to adopt a child from the Ukraine is it easier if ???

A competition I'm allowed to enter - 2010 Doris Gooderson Short Story Competition - details @ http://tiny.cc/fFP4q

Do you know a John Howard Barnes?

Tomorrow's a 'blowing out a few candles on a cake day' for me.As I'm getting that old and forgetful I  bring out a copy of my birth certificate occasionally to check how many candles I'll need and what day I'll blow them out on.The certificate is starting to look like it's a document from a census back in the 1800's apart from  the typing at the top which reads... Certified original seen by BHC Kaduna. Signed H G Davies. The bottom of the certificate I find interesting especially the registration officer John Howard Barnes who filled the form in. It'd be interesting to find out his life story. The bottom part of the form reads
I, John Howard Barnes, Registration Officer at British High Commission, Lagos, Nigeria, do hereby certify that this is a true copy of the entry of the birth of  D**** **** ****  in the register of births maintained in this office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom. Witness my hand and seal, this Twenty Third day of July 196*
I wonder did he work there long. Were there many births registered in that office.I also have to ask my old folk some time why it took them over three years after my birth to be registered with the British High Commission. Were they that mean or busy that they waited until my wee sister was born to fill two forms in at once.
Now I'm hoping that because of this blog post I am not plagued by more Nigerian scam. I also want to point out that even though I was born in Nigeria I do not send out spam emails, at least not yet.

aka The Informer

Most Sundays I'll pop into a local shop and buy at least a couple of newspapers. These will include the Sunday World and the Sunday Life. The Mrs always likes to see the free magazine from Lidl's to see what's on offer. The magazines are normally in both papers. Last Sunday  the papers I bought from Toners  only had 'gumph' advertising their own 'bargains' in them. The Mrs was disappointed, so yesterday before I went to another shop to buy the papers she told me to check them before I bought them to make sure the Lidl's magazines were inside them.I came home and made the Mrs happy with two copies of the Lidl mag, one in each paper..It seemed strange that they weren't in the papers bought from Toners Supermarket  the week before so I thought I'd check with Lidl and tell them the story.I phoned up their advertising department earlier today and told them what happened. They took my name and phone number and thanked me very much. I'm hoping in my new role as an informer that I'm paid well.I'm also hoping I find out what happens about it. If I don't hear anything in the next few days I may call into a Toners shop armed with a camera and take on investigative journalism for 5 minutes. An investigative journalist doesn't sound as good as being and 'informer'though.

Call for Public Submissions for an Audio Anthology of Poetry and Spoken Word

New Belfast Community Arts Initiative is putting out the call for Belfast’s poetic voices. Poets and aspiring poets are invited to submit their poems or pieces of spoken word art in January to be included in an audio-anthology.
This project, entitled Write Up There, is part of New Belfast’s Poetry in Motion programme, which encourages Belfast’s citizens of all ages to create, present and publish their poetry. Write Up There is in keeping with the theme adopted by artist Wolfgang Buttress for his landmark sculpture Rise, soon to be seen at the Broadway roundabout.
New Belfast is inviting poets who feel have words rising from their inner thoughts to put pen to paper and bring one or two poems or pieces of spoken word art along to our public events or send them to us.
A series of public events across Belfast have been scheduled to record and celebrate new poetry from communities and the general public.

Monday 18th January 2pmFirst Steps, York Road
Thursday 21st January6pm - 7.30pmBallyhackamore Library
Monday 25th January10.30 - 12.30
6.30pm – 8pm
NICVA, Duncairn Gardens, Antrim Road
Ballynafeigh House, Ormeau Road
Tuesday 26th January6pm - 8pmSpectrum Centre, Shankill Road
Poems can be alternatively sent as hard copy (i.e. on paper) or recorded as audio on disc to New Belfast - Unit 4 Clanmil Arts & Business Centre, Belfast BT1 1L by Monday 25th January. Poems should ideally be not longer than 90 seconds when read aloud and they should be submitted together with the author’s name, address, telephone number and email address (if available).
Poets, whose poems are selected for possible inclusion in the anthology, will be invited to record their works at a further live recording event on Saturday 6th February.

Poetry in Motion is funded by Arts Council NI (principal funder) and Belfast City Council.

Born in the wrong country

I'm not ginger haired and called Paddy nor do I ride a white horse and people call me Billy. I do however live in Northern Ireland, I'm on the electoral register here and I've even served on juries here etc etc.  I wasn't born in Northern Ireland and because of that there's another short story competition I can't enter. The competition is the Michael McLaverty Short Story Award, which has recently been launched. The guidelines for this competition solely for people born in Ireland don't state if the entries are to be written in Ulster Scots or Gaelic only. It doesn't seem consistent to me if entries written in English are accepted.Adding to the inconsistency, on the guidelines it states...
An entry fee of £5 Sterling must accompany each individual entry. Entries without this fee will not be considered.
I'm wondering if they only accept cheques from Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank and none of these foreign banks. Are the COMPETITION RULES what could be called acceptable discrimination or is this a competition encouraging racism?

If someone takes a drugs overdose, don't do the same as Peter Robinson.

I'm concerned that because of the story told by Peter Robinson, which has been widely reported, about his wife taking a drugs overdose and because of the actions he supposedly took that people are confused what to do if someone takes a drugs overdose.According to the report in the Times...
In December 2008, as the Robinsons were holidaying in their Florida apartment, Peter found out about the payments to McCambley, but not about the £5,000 his wife had kept. The first minister immediately insisted that the money be paid back to the developers.
When the couple returned home, the family found a letter from Iris to her former toy boy, in which the sexual nature of the relationship was made clear. Exposed, Robinson took a drugs overdose around midnight on March 1. Her husband spoke to a doctor on the phone, managed to bring her round and went to work.
He was taking questions in the assembly as Black phoned an ambulance to take Robinson to hospital. “I went to the hospital later that day,” he said in answer to questions on Friday.

The advice given from the NHS

Where can I get help if I've taken an overdose?

If you or someone you are with have taken an overdose of medication, drugs or alcohol and are experiencing serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or unconsciousness, ring 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance. Do not wait. If possible, tell the 999 telephone advisor and ambulance staff what has been taken.
Over ten years ago I noticed a neighbours front door left open. It seemed a bit strange, it was normally closed during the day and he was normally working.. I waited for about five minutes and then went into the house calling out the neighbours name. I found my neighbour unconscious,  lying on his settee with an empty glass and a pill container beside him on the floor. I didn't hesitate and immediately phoned for an ambulance. Thankfully the ambulance arrived quickly and in a few days time after he returned home and thanked me for what I did.
This Robinson Overdose Story leaves me with questions. Was it not that serious an overdose that Iris Robinson is supposed to have taken? Did she take an overdose at all? Are we meant to believe this story, that it really happened? If I'd rung a doctor when my neighbour took an overdose, would he still be alive today?

Celebrity, celebrity, celebrity

Have we had Celebrity Seaside Rescue, Celebrity Countryfile, Celebrity Darts, Celebrity Snooker, Celebrity Animal Rescue, Celebrity Bird Watching Bonanza or Celebrity Crimewatch  yet? If not, why not? Celebrities, who we don't remember why they are called celebrities are taking over the airways. It seems that every two or three television programmes one of these celebs turns up.We  end up watching them answering questions on this and that, skating on ice or even farting in a confined space. Surely this type of television is getting a tad boring.
Instead of celebrities we have at our disposal here in Northern Ireland, local politicians.I know they'd all be suitable to appear on a show like the Jeremy Kyle Show, but it's to predictable. We need a TV show with the same politicians we love so well,  a TV show where the public judges the politicians and decides their fate. In the 'interim' time, which there seems to be so much of . In these times of bad weather and hardship surely a show like that would lift the spirits of each and every person here in Northern Ireland.Sadly, Iris Robinson would no longer be eligible for this show. Peter however would. What would his fate be? Think Japanese television, think pain. What could a show like that be called? It'd be great if  the producers of BBC Spotlight would team up with producers from a Japanese game show and make really good television, television worth watching.
I've an hour and a half to wait now until Celebrity Big Brother live, who'll snore the loudest tonight?

Waves of thought - Harry Venning on writing radio comedy
Hamlet cartoonist and Stage TV reviewer Harry Venning took a decade to get Clare in the Community, his first radio sitcom, broadcast. After launching a second show, Sneakiepeeks, this month, the ex-actor shares his tips with aspiring broadcast writers.

The time has come, Iris.

I am not a polished or professional politician. Much of what I have to do in politics does not come easily to me. I was an uncomplicated working-class girl who was driven by circumstances and lifted up by the people in spite of my limitations. I can only hope that down-to-earth loyalty, compassion, honesty and effort can substitute for all else that I lack. There can be few greater honours than to be elected to represent the interests of our constituents. I intend to make their cares my concern, and I am willing to be judged on that basis when the time comes for them to pass their verdict.

Feels like, jumping in puddles, maybe.

Yer auld man in the red suit ye know the wan with the 'fecking' white beard must've been reading my blog posts. He's left me a couple of books. One book according to the Irish Independent is 'A sparkling and feel-good romantic read' another is described as 'Page-turning female fiction' It's all because of a meeting in a haunted house in Limavady back in June. That was when I was in what was called a 'creative writing group' who had a visit from the 1st female columnist in the Derry Journal, who blogs and tweetsand  encourages people like me to consider using the word ‘fecking’ in my writing. Yer man must've known how shy and retiring I am and how embarrassed I'd have been to go up to the counter at Easons and buy these books myself. The books, one about Aoife and Jake and the other about Niamh, Ruth, Liam and Ciara are entitled Feels Like Maybe and Jumping in Puddles and are written by the a tweeter who's BIO reads...

Fighting for the right to link!

The  right2link Internet Freedom Campaign is adamant that online copyright is to be respected, but argues that it should not be at the expense of the freedom to create, circulate and follow links to online content.

Linking – referencing someone else’s online intellectual property with a headline, short quote or summary with attribution – is standard practice for users of the Internet. Email and social networks like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn are often used to share links among friends, associates and colleagues.

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, as well as other new economy businesses that act as portals and link aggregators, occupy a key role in identifying links that are of interest to be read and passed on. They are a key part of the World Wide Web’s system of circulating information.

According to Right2Link, the free circulation of publicly accessible information is threatened if individuals, businesses and search engines cannot continue to do what they are doing today without restraint.

Recent months have seen a climate developing, in which governments and media owners have articulated an increasingly restrictive and repressive attitude towards Internet freedoms, and in which there have been a number of disturbing developments threatening to restrict the freedom to link.

First, heads of large media corporations, among them Rupert Murdoch of News Corp and Gavin O'Reilly of Independent News & Media, have accused search engines and link aggregators of stealing their content. They have ventured to suggest that publishing headlines and short excerpts, widely accepted as permissible under the law, should be made illegal.

Second, some industry members and commentators have voiced concerns that the Government's new Digital Economy Bill will threaten information sharing freedoms.

Third, the UK's major print media owners have sought to establish a counter-productive precedent by demanding organisations obtain permission to use links to the newspaper websites and for forwarding them on. The danger in this precedent is that it threatens to give any media organisation or website owner the right to demand that permission be obtained before linking. They would be able to cherry-pick who they would allow to link to their web site and at what price. This would generate a climate of uncertainty about linking that would damage the Internet’s ethos of freedom of information exchange and restrict people’s and organisations' ability to conduct their business freely.

Opponents of this trend towards restrictions on the freedom to link include online new economy businesses, search engines, portals and aggregators, enlightened new media publishers, members and representatives of the PR industry and organisations who already realise their online freedom on the World Wide Web is under threat.

However, Right2Link warns that any organisation, including charities and government departments, is open to being threatened with legal action or targeted for “license” fees by any website owner if the freedom to link is not enshrined in law and in practice as an Internet right for all.

The founding sponsor of Right2Link is NewsNow, the UK's largest news portal. The campaign is fully supported by others in the sector including Meltwater, Alacra and Zenark.

Another year, another wallpaper.

Desktop Wallpaper Calendar to be exact. Every new month doesn't seem complete without one and I normally find one @ www.smashingmagazine.com I've chosen one to start this New Year  Designed by Saidur Hossain from USA, who says of his design...
"A new year means, well….new? So that’s why I wanted to try something new. I have always loved the vector art I find all the internet and finally decided its about time to prove to myself that I can do that too. This piece is all about feeling, subconscious and conscious. I can’t believe how the slightest change in the curves or colors affected my sense of flow and for that reason I spent an unbelievable amount of time perfecting the flow of the piece ever so meticulously. Here’s to going from an old 2009 (red) to a fresh 2010 (blue)."

Before Christmas I picked up another calendar. This calendar was entitled Church Art Calendar 2010. I  bought it to find out about 'Saint's days'. Today is First Friday Mary, Mother of God World Day of Peace.I'm looking forward to St Basil the Great's day :-)

Happy New Year Folk!
